Project Onward
Following diagnosis and treatment for cancer, many cancer survivors continue to experience physical and psychological symptoms that affect their quality of life. During this transition to survivorship, some of the most common negative experiences that patients tend to report are distress (depression, anxiety, stress) difficulties in readjusting to “normal” work, family and social life, and ongoing symptoms such as fatigue, pain, and sleep problems. Unfortunately, this period is also the time in which much of the support provided by the medical care team, as well as family and friends, tends to decrease.
Project Onward was developed to provide assistance for many of these problems. The program has led to our developing a website that uses strategies to change participants' thoughts and behaviors to help them cope with this transition and to reduce the number of negative symptoms that they might experience during survivorship. The study gives patients access to our websitealong with a social network made up of other cancer survivors, during this period to help them maximize their use of the website and its tools.
We will also conduct several telephone interviews and questionnaires with you. You will receive a total of $20 for completing four 15 minute online questionaires over the 12 week course of the study.
